A NASA space capsule is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego. While watching the live television broadcast from a studio, speleologist Thelma Joyce suddenly collapses. She senses that something terrible has happened. And indeed, when the capsule is recovered, its entire crew has mysteriously vanished. Instead, scientists discover a strange rock-like object that turns out to be an extraterrestrial organism.

Thelma and several of her colleagues take the discovery along on a research expedition into a dark underground cave system. Little do they know that the seemingly harmless rock is actually alive – and extremely deadly. Deep in the darkness, far from any possible help, the creature begins to eliminate the group one by one with relentless brutality. A desperate fight for survival begins.
