Contents: Bernd is an actor at the St. Pauli Theater in Hamburg and has only played supporting roles so far. His greatest wish: to finally play a leading role. The artistic director offers him the role in “Der Gasmann” (The Gas Man), a poisonous play about two SS men who pick up their victims at their front doors and destroy them on the spot. The role turns into a nightmare. Director Frank, who usually works in film, is a brilliant despot who stages the perpetrators and victims separately; his co-star Mathis is a submissive nerd; and Bernd finds the perfidious play repulsive anyway. Things aren't going well for Bernd in other areas of his life either. He sees his son far too rarely, and his ex-wife is sending the bailiff after him.
The only two rays of hope are his mysterious girlfriend and a bizarre literary circle consisting of five characters who can't get their act together, but regularly discuss baroque texts in their local bar and meet once a year in a forest hut.
But it is precisely in this place that all order slips away within moments.
