Synopsis: The brutal murder of a white industrialist causes a stir in a small town in the southern United States. For Sheriff Gillespie (Rod Steiger), the culprit can only be a black man, and his suspicions immediately fall on Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), who is passing through town. The dark-skinned man seems to be the perfect murderer, but after his arrest, it turns out that the suspect is not only innocent, but a police officer himself. To track down the killer, Tibbs joins the investigation and quickly realizes that he has stumbled into a swamp of racial hatred and lies. Only if he and Gillespie can overcome their mutual prejudices will they have a chance of uncovering the terrible truth.
