‘Men Behind the Sun’ tells the true story of the Japanese concentration camp 731, a bacteriological experimental laboratory in Manchuria during the Second World War. The Japanese carried out cruel experiments on imprisoned Chinese and Belarusians to test the consequences of their terrible achievements. The film focuses on a group of Japanese children who are to be educated into spineless fighting machines and are taught by their teachers how to deal with the sub-humans, the ‘Marutas’ (Japanese for ‘firewood’). All this happens under the leadership of the sadistic and inhuman General Jiro Ishii, who, as the film suggests towards the end, was protected by the Americans after the war and used for his own purposes. In contrast to Ishii, the camp's security chief, Takamura, does not act out of mere bossiness. He firmly believes in the scientific value of the work being done in the concentration camp and defends it with his life when the camp is to be destroyed in the end.
