Because the Hammer production seemed to be subscribed to Dracula and Frankenstein, nobody expected a classic film outside the horror genre. But Hammer proved it in 1960 with this film: the story centers on old Olderberry, a senile pedophile. The whole town keeps quiet about this man, even a court acquits him. The community is financially dependent on the Olderberry family's sawmill. But one day, a little girl disappears and is found dead in the woods...
Alongside Fritz Lang's M, this is one of the most important early films on the subject of child abuse and child murder. It stars Sir Felix Aylmer in the role of the perpetrator. According to the trade journal Variety, Aylmer delivered a frighteningly haunting study of decadent evil. However, not least because the perpetrator was a member of the upper class, the film was almost universally hushed up. A rediscovery of this classic seems urgently needed - especially as it is the only Hammer production that was shown in cinemas in both West and East Germany.
