Shortly before the fall of Mussolini’s regime, four fascist, sadistic members of the upper class enact a cruel ritual: they abduct young men and women and abuse them as objects of desire and torture. Their bizarre perversions and humiliations culminate in a deadly orgy. Freely adapted from the novel by the Marquis de Sade, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s radical final work presents an apocalyptic nightmare of sexualised perversion and violence. This allegorical masterpiece denounces, with harrowing force, the dehumanised obsession with power and the destructive impulses of totalitarian regimes. As a metaphorical cry of protest against the excesses of consumer society, SALÒ, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM remains a timeless and painfully provocative taboo-breaker to this day – a film that cries out, accuses and refuses to look away …

Pier Paolo Pasolini’s shocking opus has been the subject of fierce censorship debates ever since its creation. Few films have been persecuted, cut, condemned and banned as often.
