Composer John Russell loses his wife and daughter in a tragic road accident. Marked by his loss, the grieving man dares to make a fresh start as a university lecturer at the other end of the country. His new home is a long-vacant mansion. But it is not a quiet place: a knocking and whispering can often be heard in the house, which seems to drive him mad. He follows the noises and comes across a secret room that has been locked. A séance reveals a crime that took place decades ago and involves people at the highest levels of society. It also reveals the former occupant of the room: Joseph, son of the Carmichael family. Russell's investigations lead him on the trail of a family tragedy and an angry ghost seeking late retribution...

THE CHANGELING is a ghost story at its very best, making a big impression with just a little. The film effectively combines familiar paranormal genre ingredients to perfection and intersperses them with crime thriller elements. The powerful performances of the actors (above all Oscar-winner George C. Scott), the outstanding sound design and the unusual camera work create a creepy, thoroughly uncomfortable, but sometimes also melancholy atmosphere, which is broken by well-dosed shocks.
