Like his literary role model, Dr. Cordelier, who is incapable of intimate relationships, researches a drug in his Paris laboratory to uncover a person's true nature. He tries the drug on himself and becomes Opale, a licentious villain without a conscience. He haunts Paris, mostly at night. He injures a man with crutches, beats up a girl and scares his colleague Dr. Severin to death. Cordelier takes an increasing liking to Opale. However, when he kills a passer-by and thus commits murder, he tries to get away from him...
