Legendary trapper and gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok (Charles Bronson) is hunting a white buffalo that has been terrorising the Black Hills. He hopes that killing the beast will free him from the nightmares in which it repeatedly attacks him.

Lakota chief Crazy Horse (Will Sampson) is pursuing the same goal. He seeks revenge on the animal for trampling his daughter to death. The two men form an unlikely friendship and set out together to hunt the mythical beast.
