Info:
After a nuclear war, the survivors live in underground shelters and bunkers. They enter the contaminated outside world only protected by gas masks and protective suits, in search of some food. A professor writes letters to his missing son Erik, asking hypothetical questions about the future of humanity and whether the nuclear war was global or limited. After his wife Anna dies of radiation sickness and there is no hope for the people vegetating in the bunkers, the professor takes care of orphans no one wants and teaches them what humanity means.
"Moving indictment of mass extermination with the help of oppressive, symbolically charged images of immense power."
Encyclopaedia of International Film
"A haunting reminder of reason, both in its protest against irrational nuclear war and in its resolute emphasis on the humanity of man, which is not least a final anchor of hope." Stefan Höltgen of F.LM - Texte zum Film.
