Synopsis:
Naples, 1943. The city has been liberated, but freedom has come at a terrible price. While the US Army under General Mark Clark (Burt Lancaster) celebrates its victory, an apocalyptic panorama unfolds across the streets of the bombed-out city. An Italian liaison officer and writer accompanies the liberators through a world in which hunger and misery have eroded every moral boundary. In order to survive, mothers sell their children, young women their dignity, and men their pride. Amid chaos, grotesque banquets and the ever-present shadow of death, the film—based on Curzio Malaparte’s autobiographical novel—asks a bitter question: What is more precious—freedom or simply one’s own skin?
