The newlywed, the virgin bride Susan, travels with her husband to his family estate in the north of Spain. Troubled by her husband's sexual demands and patriarchal ideas, she begins to doubt whether she will ever come to terms with her new married life. Shortly thereafter, Susan is shocked to discover that all portraits of female family members in the basement have been locked away and one has had its face cut out. Plagued by uncertainty about what has taken place in her husband's family, she develops terrible nightmares in which she sees the ghost of a dead bride. When her husband finds a mysterious naked woman on the beach and takes her home, the boundaries between dream and reality become blurred in an escalating bloodlust.
