The daughter of a wealthy plantation owner is so terrified of death in the Louisiana swamps that she invites Count Alucard, better known as Dracula, to make her undead with a lover's bite. Her fiancé is then supposed to dispose of the vampire. Alucard repeatedly changes form, appearing sometimes as a bat and sometimes as an aristocrat, completely unaware of what the young woman is really plotting.
In 1943, director Robert Siodmak transformed this story into a masterpiece of horror cinema starring Lon Chaney Jr.
"With Son of Dracula, a project he accepted only reluctantly and which tasked him with continuing the great tradition of Universal horror, Siodmak's body of work achieves a thematic and stylistic coherence that one would never have expected from this often impatient and erratic director," wrote Karl Prümm, praising its formal discipline and stylistic awareness, as well as its evocation of atmosphere and mood:
"The lighting now becomes the central element of the directorial concept, with dramatic contrasts of light and shadow permeating the story. Low-key lighting and darkness are given preference."
