Content: A Navy soldier conducting test parachute jumps over the Salton Sea fails to reappear. The slime found on the lifeboat resembles the secretions of snails. And if that's not enough, divers discover the horribly disfigured body of a young woman at the bottom of the lake.
The answer: an underwater earthquake has opened a fissure from which giant prehistoric molluscs are emerging, making the water unsafe by constantly laying new eggs. If the molluscs reach the open sea via water channels, their proliferation could mean the end of mankind.
Originally planned as a kaiju in Japan, but then shot in California, with an unforgettable monster from the workshop of Augie Lohman, who had already built John Huston's MOBY DICK. Bill Warren: “This modest movie is one of the better low-budget monster flicks of the mid-fifties. It was made with remarkable intelligence and builds an arc of suspense not to be sneezed at.”
