In 1920, Sir Basil Walden (André Morell) opens the tomb of the child pharaoh Kah-to-Bey, despite all warnings to the contrary. According to legend, he and his faithful servant Prem had fled the robbers of his throne into the desert, where he died. To atone for the sacrilege of desecrating the tomb, the tombkeeper Hasmid summons the mummy of the devoted Prem, a being between life and death, to take revenge on the members of the expedition. Only when the hieroglyphs of death on the Child Pharaoh's shroud are deciphered does the mummy crumble to dust. Along with Frankenstein, Dracula and the werewolf, the mummy is one of the most famous figures of the classic horror film. As early as 1932, Boris Karloff excelled in the role of the mummy Imhotep. The Curse of the Mummy, made in 1966 under the direction of John Gilling, was Hammer's third adaptation of The Revenge of the Mummy: a cleverly staged, eerie thriller, the last one Hammer made in the familiar atmosphere of the legendary Bray Studios outside London.
