Four series characters have been brought to screen fame by Hammer Productions: Dracula, Frankenstein, Quatermass and – surprisingly in this gallery – Robin Hood. The adventures of the outlaws of Sherwood Forest and the imaginary national hero Robin Hood were filmed three times.
Robin de Courtenay, cheated out of his inheritance by his wicked cousin, takes to the woods under this name and takes up the fight for freedom against the degenerate nobility and the machinations of the deceitful Sheriff of Nottingham. In the end, the hand of the beautiful Lady Marian beckons him.
Unlike most other Hammer productions, even German film critics were enthusiastic about this unusually lively version, following in the footsteps of Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn, noting "a certain freshness in the staging (lots of outdoor shots), wit in the dialogue and in the staging of the fights and – after a very dark beginning – the fact that Hood and his men do all kinds of evil things to their enemies, but do not kill them if possible." (film-dienst).
