Description

A British secret agent is shot down by Japanese forces while carrying out an important mission over an island in Malaya. She manages to hide in a prisoner-of-war camp. While some of the prisoners are hostile towards her, the British officers agree to protect her.

However, the Japanese guards soon become suspicious and eventually discover the agent by chance. When the Japanese secret service attempts to take her away for interrogation and torture, several prisoners stage an uprising, allowing her to escape.

This unusual Hammer production follows in the tradition of The Bridge on the River Kwai and offers a gripping portrayal of the isolation and horror of a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Its characters are far removed from mere stereotypes used to deliver questionable messages of perseverance. Instead, this episode set against the backdrop of the Second World War becomes a disturbing reflection on the inhuman conditions people were forced to endure at the time.
