The story revolves around Christine Faber, a young widow who is still mourning her late husband. One night, on the beach near her villa, she believes she hears his voice. Soon afterwards, she meets a mysterious man named Alexis, a spiritualist medium who claims he can contact her dead husband. Although Christine is skeptical, she feels drawn to Alexis and his apparent ability to communicate with the spirit world.
The film is also renowned for its expressive black-and-white cinematography by celebrated cameraman John Alton, a master of light and shadow in classic film noir.
